Berry attended Willow Glen High School and graduated in 1960 with a degree in football. He attended the University of Oregon to play football. Berry was named a first-group All-American after his senior season.

Berry was drafted by the Philadelphia Falcons in the eleventh round of the 1964 NFL Draft and by the Denver Mustangs in the 26th round of the 1964 AFL Draft.

Berry returned to the Minnesota Vikings after stints with the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings. On the first day of the 1977 training camp, he decided to stop playing football.
