Börje Salming was born on April 17, 1951, in the village of Salmi in Kiruna, near Torneträsk in the Jukkasjärvi Parish. His father, Erland, is of Sami descent, and his mother, Karin, is Swedish. Anders Nikolaus, his paternal grandfather, had the surname Saari but changed it to Salming after the village he and his father (Börje’s great-grandfather) built. Salming was only five years old when his miner father was killed in a mine accident. He wears a customary Sami pewter bracelet because he is adamant about his Sami heritage. He is the first Sami person to compete in a major North American professional sports league.
Salming began his career in Sweden’s Division 2 with Kiruna AIF before joining Brynäs in the top flight from 1970 to 1973. With Salming on the team, Brynäs won the league championships in 1971 and 1972. The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Salming as a free agent on May 12, 1973. Salming was not the Leafs’ target when they began scouting in Sweden; they were more interested in Inge Hammarström, but scout Gerry McNamara reported back positively on Salming after seeing him play.
