Salming made his first appearance in a Leaf’s uniform on October 10, 1973, against the Buffalo Sabres in front of a crowd that included Sweden’s ambassador to Canada. Salming and Hammarstrom were not the first Europeans to play in the NHL—the Detroit Red Wings had signed a Swede, Thommie Bergman, the year before—but there was a clear prejudice against foreign players.
Until the 1960s, the League was dominated by Canadian-born or Canadian-raised players, and national pride was still strong. A few outstanding Swedes had been given tryouts in the late 1950s and again in 1964, but they had been treated brutally on the ice. The game was still scrappy in the early 1970s, and pacifist Swedes were thought to be too soft to play in the League. “Swedes just don’t know how to fight,” Salming said in a Sports Illustrated interview a few years later. “Fighting is taught to children in Canada. In Sweden, never. It is our game philosophy.”
