Their most notable period of success was between 1979 and 1983, during which they played in the First Division and reached the 1983 FA Cup final, ultimately losing to Manchester United after a replay. However, they were subsequently relegated from the First Division in the same season.

In the late 1990s, Brighton faced financial difficulties and found themselves in the fourth tier of English football. In 1997, the club narrowly avoided relegation from the Football League to the Conference, thanks to a boardroom takeover that saved them from liquidation. Finally, in 2011, after 14 years without a permanent home ground, the club relocated to the Falmer Stadium.
