Cassidy was a defender who played for Ottawa in the 87s of the Ontario, Canada Hockey League between 1982 to 1985.

He was selected by the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) for the first game, 18th overall, in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.

Cassidy had his biggest OHL season in 1982–83 when he marked 25 goals and reinforced 86 assists for a total of 111 points.

In 1984, he achieved 12 points to win the Memorial Cup with Brian Kilrea as his trainer.

In March 1984, at the age of 19, he made his NHL breakthrough with the Black Hawks.

He had three knee surgeries between 1984 and 1988, including a substantial reconstruction of his ACL.
