During the 1970 Major League Baseball draft, the Washington Senators initially selected Sutter in the 21st round. He hadn’t received his high school diploma yet, thus he was unable to sign up with the team.
Sutter signed as an amateur free agent with the Chicago Cubs in September 1971 after spending a brief amount of time at Old Dominion University and on semi-pro baseball teams. After four years with the Chicago Cubs, Bruce Sutter joined St. Louis Cardinals from 1981 to 1984. In 1985, Bruce joined the Atlanta Braves for three years.
