The American baseball pitcher Howard Bruce Sutter was born in the United States on January 8, 1953, and passed away on October 13, 2022.

In May 1976, the Cubs were able to acquire Sutter. He participated in 52 games as a pitcher, with a win-loss record of 6-3 and 10 saves during that time.

Sutter had a 1.34 earned run average in 1977, which led to his being selected for the All-Star Game. He also placed sixth in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award and seventh in the voting for the Most Valuable Player Award.

On September 8, 1977, Sutter became the 12th pitcher in the National League and the 19th pitcher in the history of the major leagues to throw a perfect inning. He accomplished this feat by striking out all three batters in the ninth inning of a game against the Montreal Expos, which resulted in a 3-2 victory for the National League team.

When Sutter came into the game in the eighth inning, he had already struck out the side (albeit not on nine pitches), giving him a total of six straight strikeouts and setting the National League record for a reliever in terms of strikeouts.
