Bono grew up in the Finglas neighbourhood of Dublin’s Northside. Bono grew up in an interdenominational Christian family; his mother was a Church of Ireland member, and his father was a Roman Catholic.

His parents initially agreed that his first child would be raised Anglican and his second child would be raised Catholic.

On September 25, 1976, fellow student Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice on the Mount Temple bulletin board asking for people interested in starting a rock band. Bono, David Evans (“The Edge”), his brother Dik Evans, and Adam Clayton responded.

The band occasionally got together for jam sessions where they performed covers of other bands. Bono wanted to play songs by The Rolling Stones and Beach Boys because he was sick of hard rock and lengthy guitar solos. The band began writing their own songs after realizing how poorly they could play covers.

Bono is unlikely to play the guitar again because his hand has yet to heal from injuries sustained when he crashed his bike last year.
