Betty Gore, a 30-year-old mother of two, was found murdered in her Wylie, Texas home on Friday, June 13, 1980. Betty, a former fifth-grade teacher, had been hit over 25 times with a 3-foot axe in a brutal attack that left her nearly dismembered and with deep wounds across her face, according to an official at the time.
Her 1-year-old daughter screamed for hours in her crib, abandoned.
If it hadn’t been for Hollywood, Candy and Betty’s story would have remained a largely forgotten murder case. Candy, a five-part miniseries starring Jessica Biel as Candy, Melanie Lynskey as Betty, and Pablo Schreiber as Allan, premieres today on Hulu, with the remaining four episodes airing on consecutive days this week.
The series is advertised as a bloody romp through a small-town sex scandal. Biel’s character was described as a “housewife gone bad” in the press coverage leading up to the show’s premiere.

Candy, on the other hand, is portrayed as the town’s most popular girl. Biel portrays Candy as a queen bee without the Regina George bite at church, at home, and among her close friends.
