Charles began his football career as a tailback for the Pittston Area High School football squad. While in high school, he also played semi-professional baseball.

Trippi, who weighs 160 pounds (73 kg) and is considered small, was rejected by four institutions until being persuaded by Georgia alum Harold “War Eagle” Ketron to play for the University of Georgia.

With the exception of 1944 during World War II, Charles had a scholarship and played for the Georgia Bulldogs football varsity team from 1942 through 1946.

Charles competed against Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich as a sophomore in 1942.

Trippi and Sinkwich led Georgia to a 75-0 victory over rival Florida that year, in which Trippi threw a touchdown pass to end George Poschner, scored two rushing touchdowns, and returned an interception for a touchdown on defence.

Georgia finished the season 11-1 and was crowned the consensus national champion. Trippi then led Georgia to a 9-0 victory over UCLA in the 1943 Rose Bowl, carrying 27 times for 115 yards while also passing and kicking.

When the award was founded in 1953, Charles was named the game’s most valuable player retrospectively.
