Chesa Boudin is an American lawyer who was born on August 21, 1980. He has been the 29th district attorney of San Francisco since January 8, 2020, and is a member of the Democratic Party.
He formerly worked as a San Francisco deputy public defender.
Boudin worked as a law clerk to M. Margaret McKeown on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit after graduating from Yale Law School in 2011.
In 2012, he became a post-doctoral fellow at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.
Before returning to San Francisco as a deputy public defender, Boudin clerked for Charles Breyer in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in 2013 and 2014.
Boudin was the subject of a recall election on June 7, 2022, after he was widely chastised for his perceived weakness in crime.
In the recall election, 59.98 per cent of voters voted to remove him from office, and he was successfully removed from office.
After the election results are validated by the elections office and authorized by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Mayor London Breed, who endorsed a more moderate Democrat in the 2019 district attorney race, will choose Boudin’s replacement.
