During the 2023 NFL season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears fans couldn’t help but be reminded of the team’s underwhelming Matt Nagy era.

Matt Nagy, who assumed the role of offensive coordinator and play-caller for the Chiefs after Eric Bieniemy’s departure, raised eyebrows with some questionable decisions that contributed to their loss against the Lions. It’s worth noting that during his tenure as head coach of the Bears from 2018 to 2021, Nagy was also responsible for play-calling. Unfortunately for Chicago fans, the Bears had only one season without ranking in the bottom 10 for both scoring and total offense in the league under Nagy’s leadership.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to score 20 points and gain a total of 316 yards on offense during the game. Notably, this marks the lowest point total for the Chiefs since Week 9 of the previous season. In the 2022 season, the Chiefs surpassed this yardage benchmark in nearly every game.

In fairness to Matt Nagy, the Chiefs faced challenges during the game, notably the absence of their top weapon, tight end Travis Kelce, who was sidelined due to a knee injury announced just hours before kickoff. Additionally, Kansas City experienced critical drops during pivotal moments in the game. Nevertheless, given the presence of Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback, many anticipated the same high-powered Chiefs offense that had dominated the NFL for the previous five seasons.

During the first half, it appeared that way as the Chiefs accumulated a total of 187 yards and executed successful drives in two out of their four possessions. Their final drive of the half was particularly impressive, covering 82 yards in just six plays and taking a mere 88 seconds of game time, resulting in their second touchdown of the contest.

However, the second half presented a different story, as the Chiefs were limited to just six points and lost all of their earlier momentum.

In 2023, the Chicago Bears may still not boast a formidable offense, but their fans are undoubtedly relieved that Matt Nagy is no longer the one making the play-calling decisions, given the frustrations experienced during his tenure.
