Chris Gotterup’s rise in the golf world is quickening. The former Rutgers star’s most recent victory came on Friday at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he recorded a 1-under-par 69 in the second round of the US Open.
The 22-year-old Little Silver native made the cut with a 36-hole total of 2-over par 142, moving into a tie for 40th position halfway through the national championship after shooting 73 in the opening round.
Gotterup, who was recently awarded the greatest college golfer after attending Oklahoma for the sixth year in a row that the NCAA allowed all athletes to compete, is presently seven strokes down in the first round of the U.S. Open, which begins on Saturday.
As he stood on the 18th tee, needing a par to make the cut, he blasted his second shot on the 449-yard challenge inside 10 feet of the flag and made the putt for a birdie.
Gotterup tied for eighth place as an amateur in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Classic in March.
He missed the cut at his first professional competition, the RBC Canadian Open, last week.
