Cliff Richard was born in British India at King George’s Hospital (now KGMU Hospital), Victoria Street, in Lucknow, which was then a part of British India.
Rodger Oscar Webb, a manager for an Indian Railways catering contractor, and Dorothy Marie Dazely, his mother, were his parents. His parents also lived in Howrah, West Bengal, for a while.
They chose to relocate to England permanently after the violence of Direct Action Day. Richard is mostly of English ancestry, however, he did have a great-grandmother who was half Welsh and half Spanish, as she was the daughter of a Spanish great-great-grandmother named Emiline Joseph Rebeiro.
The Webbs lived in a small house in Maqbara, close to Hazratganj’s major commercial centre. Dorothy’s mother worked at the La Martiniere Girls’ School as a dormitory matron. Joan, Jacqui, and Donna (1942–2016) are Richard’s three sisters.
