Irish Republican Colm Murphy was born in Belleeks, County Armagh, on August 18, 1952. He had a history of jail due to different criminal offenses like assault, firearms offenses, and Provisional Irish Republican Army participation. He had been an active Irish Republican paramilitary since he was in his late teens.

Murphy started making real estate investments in the late 1980s, and in 1990 he established Emerald Enterprises. According to the Offenses Against the State Act of Ireland, he was accused of plotting to cause an explosion between August 13 and August 16, 1998, and was taken into custody by the Garda on February 21, 1999.

Murphy was the first individual to be found guilty in connection with the Omagh bombing and was also accused of belonging to the Real Irish Republican Army, an unlawful organization. Murphy, Michael McKevitt, Liam Campbell, and Seamus Daly were all found responsible for the blast in a civil trial while awaiting a retrial on the criminal counts.
