Gallagher was born on July 24, 1946, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Irish and Croatian parents. Loma Linda University researchers used Gallagher’s comedy to study the effects of laughter on the body in the 1980s.

The researchers observed the subject’s white blood cells increasing while taking blood samples from ten medical students while watching Gallagher in action. Laughter appeared to have boosted their immune systems, according to scientists.

Gallagher claimed that he lost nearly all of his fortune in stock market speculation and joked that he was “broke.” His long-time manager, however, disputed this as a comedic exaggeration, adding, “We all need to be as broke as Leo.”

Gallagher collapsed on stage clutching his chest on March 10, 2011, during a performance in Rochester, Minnesota. Gallagher was rushed to Saint Mary’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a minor heart attack.

Gallagher began experiencing intense chest pains a year later, on March 14, 2012, just before a performance in Lewisville, Texas. Gallagher’s manager stated that the comedian suffered a “mild to serious” heart attack and was placed in a medically induced coma while doctors attempted to figure out what was wrong with his heart.

On March 18, 2012, doctors gradually brought him out of his coma after replacing two coronary stents. Gallagher quickly recovered and began communicating with his family. Christine Sherrer, his manager, stated that he was breathing on his own, moving, and telling jokes.
