The only child of John Wesley Rice, Jr., a Presbyterian preacher, high school guidance counsellor, and dean of students at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Angelena Rice, a lecturer in science, music, and oratory, Rice was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.
