The stage name Coolio belonged to American rapper, actor, and record producer Artis Leon Ivey Jr., who lived from August 1, 1963, to September 28, 2022. With his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1999), Coolio enjoyed enormous popularity in the middle to end of the 1990s (1999). Most people connect him with the 1995 hit song “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which won a Grammy Award.

Before beginning his career as a rapper, Coolio worked as a volunteer firefighter and a security guard at the Los Angeles International Airport after earning his degree from Compton Community College.

Coolio’s first single, Whatcha Gonna Do, was released in 1987. In 1988, “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove)” was recorded by Coolio and Nu-Skool.

Coolio became a member of the WC and the Maad Circle group in 1991 as a result of the connections he developed in the L.A. rap scene. This group was headed by the rapper WC. Ain’t a Damn Thing Changed, the group’s debut album lists Coolio as a co-contributor and features him on the song “Dress Code.” The song was popular in the area.
