Crete-Monee High School in South Suburban Chicago went into lockdown following concerns of a possible weapon on campus, which later proved unfounded.
On Wednesday afternoon, Crete-Monee High School in South Suburban Chicago went into lockdown in response to fears about a possible weapon on the premises. At 12:38 p.m., the school’s website sent an alert warning parents and the community of a “High Level Incident.” Officials cited rumors of a suspected weapon being hidden inside one of the school buildings.
Students were gathered in classrooms as local law officers arrived to investigate the situation in response to these concerns. The event resulted in a substantial police presence near Crete-Monee High School. The investigation lasted about an hour, during which time the school kept parents and the general public informed.
However, it was eventually discovered that the rumors were false. The school issued a statement confirming the investigation’s conclusion and the absence of any credible threat.
Despite the fact that the lockdown had been lifted, police officers remained on the site. To control the issue, Crete’s Exchange Street between Sangamon Street and Kings Road was briefly closed.
