He was born in Liberia, Costa Rica, on October 24, 1989, and was passed over by Costa Rican clubs Saprissa, and Alajuelense at the age of 15 years old.
Gamboa played for his native team Municipal Liberia from the 2006–2007 season. He then relocated overseas, signing with Norwegian team Fredrikstad in the summer of 2010, where he played for two half seasons before joining Copenhagen in the summer of 2011.
He made his UEFA Europa League debut in a 0-1 loss to Standard Liège. In August 2012, Gamboa signed a three-month loan agreement with Rosenborg, with the Norwegian team having the option to purchase him.
On September 3, 2012, he made his Tippeligaen debut against Stabaek, winning 2-0. However, he had made an impression in Rosenborg’s ten games by November, and the club extended him a permanent deal after he agreed to a five-year contract.
