After Denzil Davies retired, an all-women shortlist was required, and she was selected to stand for Labour in the Llanelli, Wales, constituency in the 2005 General Election.
After winning it by a margin of 7,234 votes, she kept her seat. On May 19, 2005, Griffith delivered her inauguration address.
