Drinkwater, who was born in Manchester, joined the Manchester United academy when he was nine years old and progressed through the ranks before signing a trainee contract in July 2006.

Drinkwater became a fixture in Manchester United’s under-18 team in his first season, making 27 games and scoring two goals.

That same season, he made his reserve team debut, coming off the bench to replace Ritchie Jones in a 5–2 Premier Reserve League win over Wigan Athletic at home.

Drinkwater’s status in the under-18s squad was reinforced the following season, although his presence in the reserves increased.

Drinkwater came on as a 56th-minute replacement for Rodrigo Possebon in the 2008 Lancashire Senior Cup final against Liverpool on July 31, 2008, and scored the game-winning goal three minutes from full-time.

Drinkwater became a fixture with the reserve squad in the 2008–09 season, making 18 appearances and scoring twice.
