He was chosen first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2015 MLB Draft. Swanson, who was born in Kennesaw, Georgia, to parents who were both former Troy University athletes, was a lifelong Braves fan. At Marietta High School, he participated in two sports, earning the moniker “Three-point Swanson” for his basketball skill. Swanson was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school, but he decided not to sign, instead choosing to play college baseball with the Vanderbilt Commodores. Due to injury, he missed the majority of his freshman season, but as Vanderbilt’s starting second baseman, he enjoyed a spectacular sophomore campaign.
