David Edwin Birney was an American actor and director who worked in theatre, film, and television in both current and classical roles.
He is well known for his role in Bridget Loves Bernie, in which he played Meredith Baxter, whom he married after the series finished.
From 1982 to 1983, he played Dr. Ben Samuels in the television series St. Elsewhere. The two-character play, inspired by some of Mark Twain’s weaker work and letters, was edited and adapted for the stage by Birney.
The drama was based on Mark Twain’s novel The Diaries of Adam and Eve, which was broadcast on the PBS series American Playhouse.
Birney directed and starred in regional theatrical plays such as The Hartford Stage (which launched the Mark Twain Festival in Hartford) and The Capital Repertory Theatre, as well as on tour in performing arts institutions around the country.
