British politician William David Trimble, Baron Trimble, PC, presided over the Ulster Unionist Party from 1995 to 2005 while also serving as Northern Ireland’s first minister from 1998 to 2002.

At The Queen’s University of Belfast in the 1970s, Trimble began his legal career after joining the Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party, which had paramilitary ties.

He was chosen to serve on the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention in 1975, and after the VPUP disintegrated in 1978, he joined the UUP.

He continued his academic career at Queen’s University until 1990 when he was chosen to represent Upper Bann in the House of Commons. He was unexpectedly chosen to lead the UUP in 1995.

In honour of him, Colin Davidson recently sketched his portrait, which will be kept on permanent exhibit in Queen’s Great Hall.

During a service at Riddel Hall, the picture was unveiled in front of Lord Trimble and his family.
