Trimble gave up his position as UUP leader soon after losing the 2005 general election. In June 2006, he was granted a peerage that would grant him the title of Baron Trimble of Lisnagarvey in the County of Antrim.

Instead of preventing the UUP from joining the Conservative Party, he decided not to run for re-appointment to the Assembly when it was reconvened in 2007.
