By capturing the championship, Wilder became the main American world heavyweight champion since 2007, ending the longest drought in boxing history without an American heavyweight champion.

As of November 2021, ESPN ranked him as the world’s third-best competitive heavyweight, The Ring magazine ranked him fourth, while BoxRec and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board ranked him fifth.

Wilder began boxing late in life, at the age of 20. As a rookie, he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 2008 Olympics. This earned him the moniker “The Bronze Bomber,” which Wilder coined after Joe Louis, who was known as “The Brown Bomber.”
