On June 22, 2017, Derek Carr agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract extension that included a $12.5 million signing bonus, $70 million in total guarantees, and a fully guaranteed $40 million. In terms of average yearly compensation, this agreement eclipsed Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s contract as the highest-paid player in the league.

In August of that year, Carr’s $27 million yearly salary was eclipsed by Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions. Derek Carr had a season-high 417 passing yards and three touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.

Derek Carr completed the game-winning two-yard pass to wide receiver Michael Crabtree on an untimed down after a defensive holding penalty on the previous play as the clock ran out, giving the Raiders a 31-30 victory. In the final seconds of the fourth quarter in Week 15’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Carr fumbled close to the end zone, forcing a touchback, and the Raiders lost 20-17.
