Walters worked as a journalist, from 1951 until her retirement in 2015.
Barbara Walters started working for The Today Show as a segment producer and writer for women’s interest stories, in the early 1960s. After an increase in airtime due to her number of viewers, Walters was promoted to co-host of the show in 1974, making history as the first woman to occupy such a position on an American news program. She continued to pioneer women in broadcasting in 1976 when she joined Harry Reasoner as the ABC Evening News’ first female co-anchor. As a producer and co-host for the ABC news program 20/20 from 1979 to 2004, Walters was involved with the program.
