At Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, Derek began his high school football career. In his first year, Derek played on the freshmen team before developing into the backup quarterback on the varsity squad in his second year.
Although another quarterback’s preseason injury forced him into the starting quarterback position, he had no intention of doing so.
He went on to play college football at Fresno State, where he twice earned first-team MWC accolades, and was chosen by the Raiders in round two of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He was a three-time Pro Bowl pick who helped the Raiders reach the playoffs in 2016 for the first time since 2002. In 2021, he guided Las Vegas to another postseason appearance.
