Before being chosen as president, Weah served as the senator for Montserrado County. Weah grew up in the Clara Town area of Monrovia. He is of the Kru ethnic group and comes from the undeveloped Grand Kru County in southeast Liberia. His father, William T. Weah Sr., was a mechanic, and his mother, Anna Quayeweah, died in 2013. He has three brothers: William, Moses, and Wolo. He was one of thirteen children, most of them were raised by his devoutly Christian paternal grandmother Emma Klonjlaleh Brown after his parents split when he was still a baby.
