L.Q. Jones. was a veteran character actor whose career spanned seven decades, died Saturday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He was 94 years old.

L.Q. Jones was born August 19, 1927, in Beaumont, in southeastern Texas, he was an American actor and director.

He worked as a stand-up comic, briefly played professional baseball and football, and even tried ranching in Nicaragua, before turning to act after corresponding with his former college roommate, Fess Parker. in 1954, Parker was already in Hollywood working in films and on television. Jones is a practicing Methodist and a registered Republican.

McQueen took on his stage name, L.Q. Jones, with his first film role in the 1955 Raoul Walsh film Battle Cry. Jones would wear the name through his entire screen acting career.

His most recent turn came in 2006 with Robert Altman’s final film a Prairie Home Companion.

L.Q. Jones served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. He attended Lamar Junior College and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, and then studied law at the University of Texas at Austin from 1950 to 1951.
