On April 13, 2015, at a gathering at the Freedom Tower in Downtown Miami, Marco Rubio, the senior U.S. senator from Florida, officially launched his candidacy for president in 2016. Early polling indicated that Marco Rubio has been the front-runner for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2016 since at least the conclusion of the 2012 election. Rubio was considered by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to be a potential candidate for Vice President in 2012.
In contrast to Democrat Hillary Clinton, who began her presidential campaign the day before, Rubio positioned himself in his announcement address as a leader for a new generation of Americans. He also declared he would not run for re-election as a senator.
With the announcement, Rubio joined fellow Republicans (and senators) Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Democrat Hillary Clinton as the fourth major contender to formally declare their candidacy.
