He served as the Irish Republican Army’s (IRA) Director of Intelligence and a minister in the self-declared Irish Republic during the War of Independence. From January 1922 until his death in an ambush in August 1922, he served as commander-in-chief of the National Army and Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, respectively.
