He began his professional music career in the early 1960s as a member of the band Nero and the Gladiators, which had two minor British hit singles in 1961. After Nero and the Gladiators were defeated, Jones worked in France as a songwriter and session guitarist for artists like Françoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan, and Johnny Hallyday (often referred to as “The French Elvis”), for whom he wrote a number of songs like “Je suis né dans la rue” and ” tout casser” (which features Jimmy Page on guitar).

He is not yet retired. Jeff Pilson, the band’s founding guitarist, says he is skeptical of whether Foreigner will be able to continue if Mick Jones decides to cease touring with the group.
