Pele retired in football in 1977. Pele was a worldwide ambassador for football and made many acting and commercial ventures after retiring in 1977. Pele was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994. Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso also appointed Pele to the position of Extraordinary Minister for Sport.

Pele proposed legislation to reduce corruption in Brazilian football during his time in football, which became known as the “Pele Law”. Pele received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace in 1997. Pele helped inaugurate the 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals, alongside supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
