The younger child of Richard Neville, the 16th Earl of Warwick, and Anne de Beauchamp, Anne Neville was born in Warwick Castle.

One of England’s most influential nobility and the most significant ally of the House of York was her father. Cecily Neville, the husband of Richard, Duke of York, who ascended to the throne on behalf of the House of York, was her grandfather’s sister.

A large portion of Anne Neville’s youth was spent at Middleham Castle, one of her father’s estates, where she and her older sister, Isabel, got to know Richard, Duke of Gloucester (the future Richard III), and George, Duke of Clarence, two of the Duke of York’s younger sons.

From the middle of 1461 until at least the spring of 1465, or even from 1465 until late 1468, Richard attended his knighthood training at Middleham.

Did Richard love Anne Neville?

Richard undoubtedly showed Anne the loyalty he would later find so tragically lacking in others. In fact, he consented to forfeit the majority of her fortune!

He promised to give up his claim to Anne’s most valuable estates and assets if his brother agreed to Richard and Anne’s union.

This appeared to show that Richard really did love Anne if nothing else.
