Musk was born and raised in South Africa’s Pretoria. Musk studied at the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada at the age of 17, where Musk obtained citizenship through his Canadian-born mother. Musk enrolled at Queen’s University two years later and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. He moved to California in 1995 to enroll at Stanford University, but he changed his mind and chose to pursue a career in business instead.

Early in 2001, Musk got involved with the nonprofit Mars Society and talked about funding strategies for putting a plant growth chamber on Mars. Along with Jim Cantrell and Adeo Ressi, he went to Moscow in October of that year to purchase reconditioned intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could launch the greenhouse payloads into space. Although Musk met with NPO Lavochkin and Kosmotras, Musk was viewed as a novice, and the group left for the United States with nothing. The team went back to Russia in February 2002 along with Mike Griffin, president of In-Q-Tel, to search for three ICBMs. They met with Kosmotras again and were offered one rocket for $8 million, which Musk declined. Instead, he decided to establish a company that would manufacture low-cost rockets. Musk founded SpaceX in May 2002 with $100 million of his own money and later became CEO and Chief Engineer.
