The Real IRA refers to itself as simply “the Irish Republican Army” and, like the Provisional IRA before it believes that it is the only legitimate continuation of the original Irish Republican Army.
In the United Kingdom and the United States, it is a prohibited terrorist organization and is an illegal organization in the Republic of Ireland.
The Real IRA has fought a war in Northern Ireland against the British Army and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), originally the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC).
Of all the paramilitary “dissident republican” groups waging war on the British security services, it is the biggest and busiest.
It has attacked the security forces with firearms, bombs, grenades, mortars, and rockets. Additionally, the group was behind bombs in England and Northern Ireland with the intention of disrupting and causing harm to the economy.
