Torode was born in Melbourne, Victoria, the youngest of three boys, but from the age of four (after his mother died) to ten, he lived in Maitland, New South Wales, with his brother Andrew and his grandmother, who taught him to cook.

At the time, his father and brothers lived with him in Edithvale, Melbourne; nevertheless, his father was frequently away from home due to work.

His early cooking career began at the Aspendale restaurant Le Coq Au Vin, and he went on to apprentice at a number of restaurants in Melbourne’s Beaumaris district.

He has remarked that the cuisine he ate as a child was pretty conventional, and as a result of this association, roast chicken has become one of his favourite cuisines.

His favourite dish at the time was crumbed lamb cutlets. He’s also mentioned that Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was one of his first favourite books in school.

Does Torode Own MasterChef?

He previously owned Smiths of Smithfield and the Luxe, and is a restaurateur. He’s also written and presented a few cookbooks, some of which he co-wrote with Gregg Wallace, another MasterChef judge.
