Shakur was born in New York City to political activists and Black Panther Party members. After being reared by his mother, he relocated to Baltimore in 1984 than the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988.
With the release of his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, in 1991, which was renowned for its conscious rap lyrics, he became well-known in West Coast hip hop.
Shakur went on to release the albums Me Against the World (1996) and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. (1993), which both received positive reviews and were commercial successes (1995).
His Diamond-certified All Eyez on Me (1996) album abandoned his pensive lyrics in favour of tense gangster rap.
In the latter phases of his career, Shakur dealt with legal troubles, including time in jail. In the lobby of a recording studio in New York, he was shot five times. In 1995, Shakur was found guilty of sexual assault and given an eight-month prison sentence.
He was later released while his conviction was being appealed. After being set free, he joined Marion “Suge” Knight’s Death Row Records and actively took part in the growing East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry.
On September 7, 1996, an unidentified assailant shot Shakur four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. Shakur died six days later.
