Angus Gaye who is professionally known as Drummie Zeb was born on September 24, 1959, in London to an immigrant couple from Grenada. He first met Tony Robinson and Brinsley Forde while attending Holland Park School in London, where they later formed a band.
In the Ladbroke Grove neighbourhood of West London, the band Aswad was founded in 1974. Gaye played both the lead vocals and the drums for the band. After their 1976 first single, Back to Africa, was made public, Aswad became well-known. By signing with Island Records in the 1970s, they became the first British reggae band to sign with a major label.
Gaye also worked as a record producer for other musicians, including Ace of Base, Vanessa-Mae, Caroll Thompson, and others. Ace of Base’s cover of the single Don’t Turn Around became a worldwide hit in 1994. At the age of 62, he passed away on September 2, 2022.
