For more than 50 years, American musician Joe Michael “Dusty” Hill played bass for the rock group ZZ Top. He passed away on July 28, 2021. In addition to playing the keyboard, he sang both the lead and the backing vocals.
Hill began performing music with his brother Rocky Hill when he was a little child. He was born in Dallas, Texas. He joined the freshly established ZZ Top in 1968, along with the band’s drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy Gibbons.
They kept putting out songs, including the best-selling Eliminator album (1983).
Hill favoured simple melodies and “big,” distorted sounds. According to critics, his basslines were an essential component of ZZ Top’s sound, balancing out Billy Gibbons’ antics on the guitar.
As a member of ZZ Top, Hill was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
