Elizabeth Kenny was born on September 20, 1880, in Warialda, New South Wales, Australia, as Sister Elizabeth Kenny or Sister Kenny. Elizabeth Kenny had little formal education, but Elizabeth Kenny was a voracious reader with a keen interest in medicine and human anatomy. Encouraged by Aeneas McDonnell, a Toowoomba surgeon who had treated her for a broken wrist, Kenny decided to pursue her interest in medicine, volunteering at a hospital in Guyra, New South Wales, and learning the basics of nursing. Although Elizabeth Kenny was not a registered nurse, Elizabeth Kenny began her own nursing practice around 1910, while living with her family at Nobby in Darling Downs, Queens, travelling by horseback, and later by motorcycle, to visit patients.

Kenny volunteered to serve as a nurse in the First World War and travelled to Europe in 1915. Elizabeth Kenny wasn’t a registered nurse, but nurses were in short supply, so Elizabeth Kenny was assigned to work on “Dark Ships,” slow-moving transports that ran between Australia and England with all lights turned off. On the return voyage, they transported war goods, soldiers, wounded soldiers, and trade goods. Throughout the war, Kenny served on these dangerous missions, making 16 round trips (plus one round the world via the Panama Canal).
