Ellie was born on November 11, 1994. After receiving the diagnosis of achondroplasia, a kind of dwarfism, her height climbed to 4 feet (1.21 meters), but her weight stayed constant at 45 kg. Meanwhile, the young athlete resisted letting her disability define who she was.
Ellie started swimming when she was five years old, and by the time she was eight, she was competing against children without impairments.
At a disability tournament, people were eager to recognize her outstanding swimming abilities. From that moment on, nothing could stop her from swimming her way into the senior British Swimming squad.

Steven, Pauline, Georgina, and Katie, Ellie Simmonds’ four siblings, were also raised with her. Her parents are Steve and Val Simmonds. She is closest to her sister Katie, who also has achondroplasia, in the family because she is the youngest.
Her oldest siblings, who are in their 30s and 40s, are more than 20 years older than her.
The sister she gets along with the best is Kate. She shares achondroplasia with Simmonds and is five years Simmonds’ senior.
