Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, an Ethiopian nun, was well-known for her piano prowess and musical compositions. She was born Yewubdar Gebru on December 12, 1923. Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou studied the early Ethiopian sacred music of Saint Yared, the composer and father of Mahlet, during the early 1960s while residing in Gondar.

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou fled from Ethiopia to Jerusalem, Israel after the death of her mother in 1984 because the communist ideology prevalent there under Mengistu Haile Mariam’s rule threatened her religious convictions.

The 2019 advertising campaign “Coming Home” for Amazon’s Echo Car and Echo Smart Speaker was created by the advertising agency Wongdoody and featured the Guebrou song “Homesickness.” Foreign media outlets are becoming more and more interested in Emahoy’s life and her music, including Voice of America, Deutche Velle, Le Monde, the BBC, Israel, and Canada TV.
