Thompson spent the majority of her early years growing up in Scotland. She has ancestry from both Scotland and England. Her ancestry is of the white race. She grew up and was born in England. Sophie Thompson, her younger sister, was born on January 20, 1962. Emma Thompson went to Camden School for Girls when she was younger. She eventually joined him at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, where he was pursuing a degree in English.
