Emmett Shear serves as Twitch’s CEO and is a part-time partner with the venture capital firm Y Combinator.

Shear founded Justin.tv in 2006 with the help of partners Justin Kan, Michael Seibel, and Kyle Vogt. Kan uses a webcam mounted on his head to broadcast a live video feed of his life 24 hours a day.

The four partners decided to switch from Kan’s “lifecasting,” which lasted for about eight months, to offering a live video platform so that anyone could publish a live video stream.

Prior to its closure on August 5, 2014, Justin.tv became one of the most popular live video platforms in the world since its 2007 launch, had more than 30 million unique visitors each month.

Shear took over as CEO on August 29, 2011.
