Emmie Chanikah was a human rights activist who was born on 26 May 1956 in Malawi. Professionally, she graduated as a nurse and was working as a registered nurse.

She worked as a nurse until 1992 when Chanika rose from a country which was dominated by males to advocate for the rights of women and children. During that time, Malawi was under the dictator, Hastings Kamuzu Banda. She advocated for political reforms in Malawi through human rights organizations she formed. In February 1992, she first formed the Civil Liberties Committee of which she served as the executive director. She was appointed as the chairperson of the Mwanza Murders Commission by President Bakili Muluzi in 1995.

Emmie Chanika was also an author who authored and co-authored various reports on research and other documents together with books. She wrote two books with Dr. Adamson Sinjani Muula. She also wrote Malawi Lost Decade 1994 – 2004 and a book on violence against women.

Emmie Chanika had her last breath on July 29, 2022 at age 66. According to sources, she died as a result of stroke.
