Emory Maurice Ashley, the first black grand master, described American chess player Andrew Tate II as “absolutely a trailblazer for African-American chess.”

He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 27, 1958, and is the father of kickboxer and internet celebrity Andrew Tate. He is the son of prominent attorney Emory Andrew Tate Sr.

Tate Jr. is known to have learned to play chess as a child and to have served in the United States Air Force as a sergeant, where his language skills proved invaluable.

 

In addition to establishing a reputation as a creative and dangerous tactician on the US chess circuit, he also won about 80 tournament games against Grand masters and the US Armed Forces Chess championship five times.

Emory Tate died in Milpitas, California, in the United States, at the age of 56. He died on October 17, 2015, after collapsing unexpectedly during a tournament. Emory Tate reached his highest US chess rating of 2499 in 1997. Following the US Masters the following year, he achieved a live rating of 2500. His FIDE rating peaked a year later at 2413. This enabled him to become an international chess master before the age of 50.
